Diabetics must observe their food consumption and limit foods containing high amounts of sugar and carbohydrates. A doctor can recommend a specific calorie intake every day to help with weight loss. A diabetic diet of 1 200 calories is a low-calorie diet that is often prescribed to people trying to lose weight. The meal plan includes three meals and two snacks and includes portion-controlled snacks.

Food planning

According to the American Diabetes Association, people with diabetes should avoid skipping meals and snacks, as this can lead to a sudden decrease in blood glucose levels or hypoglycemia. Therefore, diabetics should ensure that they eat a balanced meal or snack every four to five hours of waking up. If the daily calorie limit is only 1 200 calories, meals and snacks should consist primarily of low-calorie foods.

Carbohydrates are the most important nutrient that will increase blood glucose so that diabetics should moderate the number of carbohydrates they consume during a meal or snack. The American Diäteverband explains that carbohydrates can be found in foodstuffs such as fruits, starchy vegetables, cereals, milk, yogurt and desserts or sweets. Controlling the ingestion of these foods is important because eating a large number of carbohydrates in a session can cause high blood glucose. Over time, uncontrolled hyperglycemia will severely damage the body.

Diabetics have a higher risk of developing heart disease than their non-diabetic peers. The American Heart Association, therefore, encourages diabetics to consume a diet that is not saturated and trans-fatty. These two fats are found in animal products, such as butter and lard, and processed foods such as Fast food and pastries. Healthy fats, unsaturated fats, are those that are found as herbal products. Olive oil, avocado, and nuts are examples of healthy fats. However, since the 1 200 calorie-rich diabetic diet is low in calories, healthy fats should also be limited to small portions.
